Ready for Battle?

Ask yourself this question:   Can God count on me?  Does He consider me first string?  or 2nd or 3rd sub?  Have I shown Him that I’m dependable and trustworthy?  Have I proven that I can get the job done like He wants?  Or am I like an intern who has to be spoon-fed instructions, & then God has to do it Himself?

Maybe the more important question is, am I willing?  The Psalmist says, “Your troops will be willing on your day of battle”  Ps 110:3 NIV   Am I willing to go to the front lines, or am I content to keep my position in the rear where it’s safe & comfortable?

“So take up your sword and your shield, and START FIGHTING!!”

Why all the detail?

Have you ever noticed how specific God’s word can be?  If you have any doubts, read the Old Testament.  I’ve been reading in Exodus where God instructed Moses how to make the tabernacle, the altar, the ark of the covenant, the priestly garments, etc…the detail is amazing.  Why?  Was it really necessary to use ruby, topaz, beryl, turquoise, sapphire, emerald, jacinth, agate, amethyst, chrysolite, onyx, & jasper in the priest’s breastpiece?  Why did God command the stones be placed on the priest’s shoulders AND on his chest?  Why does it matter?

Why did God create the earth, the sky, the stars, the oceans, the animals, the plants, & all of humanity with such intimate detail, down to the smallest cell?  Why did he bother to color the leaves in fall, or the sun gold, or one person light, & another one dark?  Why does it matter?

My wife had a great answer…because WE matter.  God cares for us right down to the smallest detail.  Nothing slips past Him.  No part of our lives goes unnoticed.  He made us each particular individuals with our own unique perspective, experience, & conscience.  Just like the priest was commanded to carry those precious stones on his shoulders & on his chest, God not only upholds us on his shoulders, through the power of His word, but He also holds us on His chest, next to His heart.  Regardless of what others may say about us, we are of the utmost value to Him, because He made us.  He knows us better than we know ourselves.

Take my hand
You know I’ll be there,
If you can I’ll cross
The sky for your love,
For I have promised for
To be with you tonight
And for the time that will come.

Take my hand
You know I’ll be there,
If you can I’ll cross
The sky for your love
And I understand
These winds and tides,
This change of times
Won’t drag you away.
Hold on, hold on tightly,
Hold on and don’t let go
Of my love.

The storms will pass
It won’t be long now.
The storms will pass
But my love last forever.

And take my hand,
You know I’ll be there,
If you can I’ll cross the sky
For your love.
Give you what I hold dear,
Hold on, hold on tightly.
Hold on, hold on tightly.
Rise up, rise up with wings,
Like eagles you’ll run, you’ll run.
You’ll run and not grow weary.

Take my hand, take my hand.
Hold on tightly.
Hold on tightly.
This love last forever,
This love last forever,
Take my hand,
Take my hand.

Truly Life

“…so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life  1 Timothy 6:19-b

So there is a life that is only ethereal, only smoke & mirrors, only a cheap imitation of what Jesus can provide for us.  This life may seem right & good & it may provide some temporary pleasure, but it’s only a fake, it’s only fleeting, & it’s only counterfeit.  The devil wants us to to be satisfied with a cheap imitation.  He makes us think we’re actually living “the life” when we’re actually living a lie.

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death”  Proverbs 14:12  NIV

“I am come that they may have life, & that they might have it more abundantly”  John 10:10  KJV

I was living that life.  I had convinced myself that I was living “the life”, but if I’m honest, I was on a path to death & destruction.  It may have shimmered or shined, but it quickly faded & turned into nothing.  And I would probably still be on that road, if God hadn’t reached down & pulled me up.  He had a plan for me.  His love would not fail.  That which He started, He would see to the finish.  He wouldn’t give up on me, even though I gave up on Him…

The goodness of God brings me to my knees

revealing His love, His plan for me

The grace that abounds, so full & so free

the blood that He shed, all for love, all for me

I can’t comprehend a love so divine

to take on my sin, my shame & my pride

What more can I give?   What idols must fall?

I give Him my life, I surrender it all

Christian Maturity

In my men’s group this week we talked about James 1:2-4

” Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverence.  Perseverence must finish it’s work so that you my be mature & complete, not lacking anything”

So it would appear that when we achieve a little maturity, this is what we have to look forward to…

“As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come”  Mark 4:29 NIV

“I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground & dies, it remains only a single seed.  But if it dies, it produces many seeds”  John 12:24 NIV

“If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it”  Mark 8:34-35  NIV
